On 26 July 2024, the Irish Government made an important change to the Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS). Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan TD, announced that they are increasing the Built Heritage Grant limit for an individual project from €15,000 to €50,000.

Over the past three years, the BHIS has supported 1600 owners of historic houses with €12 million of funding as part of a concerted effort to preserve Ireland’s built heritage and reinvigorate local communities.

The Government has decided to enhance the scheme, perhaps partly spurred on by the economic rewards of this investment project within local areas, as well as the rise in building costs since the COVID pandemic. The grant limit for smaller projects has been increased significantly by 70%. A grant scheme for larger projects has also been incorporated- the Historic Structures Fund (HSF) which provides financial support of between €50,000-200,000 for larger heritage ventures.  Grant applications have been brought forward three months running from the 27 July to the 27 September 2024 with successful applicants announced in early January 2025 to enable projects to be completed more swiftly in the same year.

Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien TD, said:

“I am delighted with the enhancements to this year’s Built Heritage Investment Scheme. Well-judged re-use of our traditional building stock can help us meet housing needs, revitalise communities, and keep properties from falling into dereliction. I very much look forward to seeing the real impact this scheme will have in our cities, towns, villages, and countryside.”

The BHIS scheme is an excellent example of local and national government cooperation and, Alan Dillon TD Minister for Local Government, has praised the work of Architectural Conservation and Heritage Officers in supporting and implementing the scheme since its introduction.
