The National Fleet Database (NFD) is a national vehicle registration system that places new legal obligations on Motor Fleet policyholders in Ireland.

The legislation, which complies with the EU Motor Directive and the Road Traffic and Roads Act 2023, requires fleet owners to register details for any vehicles covered under a motor fleet policy by the 30 November 2023.

The purpose of this legislation, which is enforced by the An Garda Síochána, is to make sure that all vehicles driven on Irish roads are insured at all times. If the Garda come across a fleet vehicle that is not listed on the NFD the driver will have to provide proof of insurance at a Garda Station within 10 working days or the vehicle could be impounded. The legislation also requires the policyholder to update the NFD with any changes in information, such as vehicle acquisition/disposal, or the addition/removal of a named driver, within a 14-day time frame. If your fleet is insured with certain insurers, such as Chubb and Dual, they already ask for the correct information to help ensure their clients are compliant with the new regulations.

Fleet owners who do not provide the required information in a timely fashion will be committing an offence and are liable to a fine of up to €500; in addition they may have their vehicle/vehicles seized if there is no evidence of insurance.
